R Balki REVEALS ‘Ghoomer’ got ‘smashed’ in Gadar 2 ‘tsunami’; says, ‘Had we come with it, we may have been better off’ | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Bollywood’s ace filmmaker R Balki‘s cricket drama ‘Ghoomer‘ couldn’t do wonders at the box office. As we know, the film was released a week after Sunny Deol-led ‘Gadar 2′.
A sequel to the blockbuster ‘Gadar’, the film had a box office face off with Akshay Kumar-Pankaj Tripathi starrer OMG 2– where both films emerged as winners at the box-office.
In an interview with Indian Express, R Balki revealed that ‘Ghoomer’ didn’t get sandwiched, it got smashed.

The filmmaker said that movies like ‘Ghoomer’ need time for the word of mouth to reach its target audience and subsequently should have enough showcasing for audiences to watch it in theatres.
Elaborating further, Balki added that they had no other date, if it came along with ‘Gadar 2’, the film may have been better off. Because ‘Gadar 2’ did better in the second week. He said that nobody expected this kind of a thing. This kind of tsunami was not expected.
According to him, films like ‘Ghoomer’ need enough time for word of mouth to travel. The word of mouth was too much for other films. Even ‘Ghoomer’ had that and it did make people go to theatres, it still is going on.

The filmmaker recalled his 2018 drama ‘Padman‘ also took a hit as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’ arrived on January 26, a date which was initially locked for the Akshay Kumar film. He added that it was such a wave, the same kind of tsunami, so we had to postpone. There was such good anticipation for the film but then this got released and suddenly everything went out of the window, Balki said.
